(And with this photo, I have evidence on how I like to demolish my cakes as much as I like to make them.   People are actually scared to cut them and so I end up doing it EVERY TIME!  LOL)

I was completely wiped out by a cold this past week and so some brillant ideas about how to finish off the Harley cake just didn't happen.    Still a bit sad that I didn't have a chance to paint the topper with silver lustre dust cause that would've been amazing.   Its a two layer fondant cutout that I painted freehand.   Luckily enough all the letters fit or I was going to try to pass off "Happy Birt" as being the new way kids say "Happy Birthday!"   My secret was starting with the middle letter for the names and phrase and working from the middle letter out on each line.

I ran out of time frosting this cake but I knew just how good the frosting was and didn't care how imperfect it looked!   But of course to non-cake decorators it was still an impressively smooth frosted cake.   My husband was so into this cake for his dad, he came up with the design idea and even lent a hand frosting it for me!   ...I shouldn't act so surprised about that as he is a chef, went to culinary school, and spent the past year doing pastries.

This looks SO COOL! I really love how clean the lines are :D </p>

I had that problem with writing on a cake at work the other day; I got to CONGRATULA and had to toss it and grab another one and write it smaller (it was just mudcake thankfully and we had plenty of them).

Thanks! I actually meant to clean up the lines a bit.

Its so hard when you can't do some faint pencil lines for lettering work. I've tried doing something similar on the fondant but the barely there lines are incredibly hard to see.

COOK frosting a cake

the chocolate on that cake looks to die for. I agree that it didn't really matter how smooth it was.
I always wind up cutting my own cakes (and any other cake!) too. I'm good at it by now, and I'd rather do it myself than have people hack away at it.

haha, oops! I talked cake and frosting but it looks like I deleted it. I modified a recipe from the Kitchen Magpie blog for Chocolate Buttercream. It has to be the yummiest "butter"cream I've ever made. I used cocoa, dark chocolate, and french pressed coffee, and a 2 to 1 for vegan margarine and veg shortening.

My toddler thinks your avatar is the yummiest looking thing BTW.

Great job. I freehand paintings on fondant too. Ive had to do that (count the letters and spaces, divide up the words to get them to fit) my cakes are in my other lj: whyte_icing also, myhusband is a chef, too! So I trust him to work on cakes but i kinda dont. Haha!
