I made my dad a birthday cake this weekend...Triple fudge cake mixCaramel filling (intended, but caramel didn't turn out quite right, so it was more of a cream filling)Fudge ganache frostingPirouette cookies "sticks"Melted butterscotch and cinnamon hard candies "flames"Edited to ADD:This is where I got the idea-
What a cool idea! I love it. The "flames" look awesome, and the cake sounds soooo yummy!
That's fantastic! Well done.
A campfire cake! That's a really cool design, I love it!The cake sounds delicious too. Do you happen to have a recipe for the caramel filling?
It was supposed to be a boiled can of sweetened condensed milk, but the first time I made it, I didn't boil it, I just put it into a crockpot water bath overnight and it was delicious. I tried to do this one on higher heat and less time, and it simply didn't completely caramelize fast enough for me to get the cake done on time so I just poured it on and started frosting. It still tasted good however. Here are some other methods that I should have done:http://www.recipelink.com/mf/0/40291http://www.recipesource.com/side-dishes/beverages/milk/00/rec0011.htmlIt is quite delicious when done right!
Brilliant. I'm so going to make one of these for our next Boy Scout function! Thanks for sharing.
ha ha, well, it's certainly not patent-pending! And it's so simple to do, particularly as I have no frosting/piping skills myself.
OMG I can not explain how impressed I am. I was a Campfire Girl when I was little and I just LOVE this.
OMG I was Campfire Girl too and that is why looked at it... I meet so few of campfire people now :(
Ha!! That is awesome, and very creative! :)
Thanks! I have to admit, I got the idea from somewhere else (can't find link, had it saved as pdf forever), but they used pretzels instead of the Pirouettes, yellow cake instead of chocolate, etc.
That cake is awesome! Would you mind passing along the pdf?
I've updated the post with it!
Hey, all great ideas are inspired from something! I've had so many thoughts of amazing cake ideas, and then searching cakecentral...yep, it's already been done. Doesn't discourage me though, because chances are- if *I* haven't seen it in person, most of the people seeing it won't have either. And it's turned out that way every time so far! :)
Heh heh. There are no new shapes, no new songs, etc. etc. (but don't let that keep you from trying...)
Wow! One of the more creative cakes I've seen. :) Nicely done!
Thanks! It was terribly simple to put together!
Love it and want one!! ;)
that is awesome! I am going to have to make one of these for our next camping trip!
I love this, so clever!
Yuuuuummmm, that looks so good!
Fantastic.I like your version better than the sample pic.Great job!
Thank you! I think next time I'll try to get the flames thinner, and wispier, but I was multi-tasking as I made them, and kind of skipped the step of crushing the candy!
I second this; yours rocks!
LOVE! it! it looks fabulous!
Um I totally love this and I can't wait to go camping. :)
Oh that is sooo cute! I wish my prof didn't have to cancel his Algonquin park lecture this would have been PERFECT!
The flames look like stained glass.
Yes- you can use the same method to make 'stained glass windows' in cookies. I used to do that with my grandma- cut out your cookie, then use a smaller cutter to cut out a small shape out of the middle, fill with chunks of hard candy and bake.
OMG! You couldn't have posted this at a better time! my boyfriend takes his physical test to get into the FDNY tomorrow and for months hes been eating soo helthy and I've been wanting to make him some kind of fire related cake to celebrate getting in. It looks awesome and its very inspirational to what I want to do.
