What a cool idea! I love it. The "flames" look awesome, and the cake sounds soooo yummy!

It was supposed to be a boiled can of sweetened condensed milk, but the first time I made it, I didn't boil it, I just put it into a crockpot water bath overnight and it was delicious. I tried to do this one on higher heat and less time, and it simply didn't completely caramelize fast enough for me to get the cake done on time so I just poured it on and started frosting. It still tasted good however.
Here are some other methods that I should have done:

It is quite delicious when done right!

ha ha, well, it's certainly not patent-pending! And it's so simple to do, particularly as I have no frosting/piping skills myself.

it's so adorable. My frosting skills are limited as well. And the boys have a camping trip next weekend. For their meeting before the camping trip this would be so awesome.

Thanks! I have to admit, I got the idea from somewhere else (can't find link, had it saved as pdf forever), but they used pretzels instead of the Pirouettes, yellow cake instead of chocolate, etc.

Hey, all great ideas are inspired from something! I've had so many thoughts of amazing cake ideas, and then searching cakecentral...yep, it's already been done. Doesn't discourage me though, because chances are- if *I* haven't seen it in person, most of the people seeing it won't have either. And it's turned out that way every time so far! :)

Heh heh. There are no new shapes, no new songs, etc. etc.
(but don't let that keep you from trying...)

Thank you! I think next time I'll try to get the flames thinner, and wispier, but I was multi-tasking as I made them, and kind of skipped the step of crushing the candy!

I did my candy last night and I'm putting the cake together tonight. The candy came out really thin and kind of shattered all over. I didn't get bigger pieces like you have but I'll make it work. I couldn't find those cookies but my kid gave me the brilliant idea of those new cereal straws in Coco Puffs (brown) woo hoo!

The flames look like stained glass.

Yes- you can use the same method to make 'stained glass windows' in cookies. I used to do that with my grandma- cut out your cookie, then use a smaller cutter to cut out a small shape out of the middle, fill with chunks of hard candy and bake.

I made my dad a birthday cake this weekend...
Triple fudge cake mix
Caramel filling (intended, but caramel didn't turn out quite right, so it was more of a cream filling)
Fudge ganache frosting
Pirouette cookies "sticks"
Melted butterscotch and cinnamon hard candies "flames"
Edited to ADD:
This is where I got the idea-
