Turkey cake

Creamcheese cake, with creamcheese icing (crumb coat and filling) and covered in fondant with fondant accents. The little turkey was made long ago with gumpaste. I'm dealing with carpal tunnel problems so this is my first fondant cake since summer. I'm happy I can still work with fondant, and I was sure to take lots of breaks. Overall, I'm very pleased with the cake.

Sonic the Hedgehog Birthday Cake
by The Fussy Eater (takayanagi)
at September 23rd, 2012 (11:19 am)

Sonic the hedgehog birthday cake for my partner's younger brother(who is 5!). It my 1st attempt at sugar paste and I'm really pleased! :) Though I must say, Martin who has never one baked or even touched sugar paste, did a fanastic job. He did quite alot of the decorating!

The cake itself was a Vanilla buttercream coloured blue(for sonic) and filled with homemade strawberry jam and vanilla buttercream.

Petits Fours Closeup

For those of you who don't know, Petit Fours are little, hand-decorated cakes; in fact, the name literally translates to "little oven".

My partner in crime (AKA FormerRoomie) and I  prefer to think of them as "Satan's Appetizers".

Let's just say that these mini cakes are considered the Paris Hilton of the baking world, in that they are very rich, annoyingly difficult to deal with, and usually not worth the bother. If you can even find a bakery willing to make them for you, they'll probably charge you an arm and a leg for each one (hint: if their quote seems outrageous, they're probably trying to price you out of ordering them so they don't have to make them, no lie!)

However, when a long-term and very loyal client wants some for her baby shower, what are we to do?  Damned if you do, damned if you don't.  Our commission (should we choose to accept it...dun dun DUNNNN!), in addition to creating a custom 60+ serving two-tier fondant cake, was to make five dozen of these sweet little pains in the ass confections.

The most important thing to know about P4's: if you're gonna make these l'il buggers, make sure you're going to do a LOT of them.  Take it from us; it's absolutely NOT WORTH IT to make only a dozen or two.

My Little Pony cake!
by Princess Celestia (sapphybelle)
at November 13th, 2012 (06:56 pm)

I'm a qualified baker and training pastry chef who likes to bake cakes in my spare time. Recently I've had a few requests for birthday cakes and one of them was a My Little Pony cake for the young daughter of a friend of mine. Her only specifications were "rainbow cake and her favourite colour is pink" so with that in mind I made the cake I've been wanting to make for some time now: Pinkie Pie's gala dress! The birthday party in question isn't till this Saturday but I am having an operation tomorrow (just having a tooth out, nothing serious) and I wasn't sure if I'd be fully recovered from the general anesthetic by Thursday/Friday. Anyway!

I am here at the Grand Gala, for it is the best party, but the one thing it was missing was a pony named Pinkie! For I am the best at parties, all the ponies will agree... ponies playing, ponies dancing, with me at the Grand Gala!Collapse )

Cross-posted around the various baking/cake comms and the pony comm!

Miss Cherry Blossom [userpic]
HK Strawberry cake
by Miss Cherry Blossom (manic_geisha)
at October 23rd, 2012 (11:41 am)

I made this cake for my niece during the summer.   She wanted to eat the fondant figures so badly off my previous cake (but she doesn't eat cake or frosting!) so I tried to make a mini figure with no armature in my extremely humid house.   Needless to say that didn't work at all and it looks to me like HK desperately needs a nap to sleep it off.

I Like you- the zombie brain cake

I made this cake for our 3rd anniversary last month.   Our reading was "Like" by the Mighty Mike McGee which is hilarious and you should check it out.   In a bit of random silliness, we thought a zombie whale would make the best zombie addition which I realize now that I never took a good photo of.  There is also a pot of petunias to go with the zombie whale ala The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie.   My 2 year old applied the red gel for me :)

...looking at this I really wish I had some of this cake left, LOL.   It was a dark chocolate cake with salted caramel, espresso swiss meringue buttercream.
